It's just a shame that, unlike bipedal robots which are just suboptimal/inefficient, variable fighters would be impossible because having so many separate moving parts on an airframe wouldn't be able to handle the large amount of Gs it would pull, although I think later on in newer series they hand-waved it with some sort of powerful magnetism.
